THE PROMISED SEED

  INTRODUCTION

A.     (Gen.1:26) Why did God create man?

a.       not because He needed anything from man (Ac.17:25)

b.       not because He needed to prove anything [prove to who]

c.       because of love & willing companionship (Gen.3:8; 5:24; 6:9)

B.     God did not create man to be a puppet with no choice, so forbidden fruit was necessary (Gen.2:8,9).  Without the possibility to do evil, man would have no choice but to obey God.

C.     Tragically, man made the wrong choice & sinned (Gen.3:6).

D.     Sin does the following:

            a. antagonized God & breaks fellowship with Him (Isa.59:2; Hab.1:13; 2Cor.6:14)

            b. conquers & enslaves (Joh.8:34; Rom.6:19; 7:23) [man is unable to free himself from sin’s captivity]

E.      After sin broke man’s fellowship with God, He made a promise to provide mankind with a deliverer.  This promise of a deliverer was initially given as a SEED PROMISE (Gen.3:15)

a.       the seed of woman & the seed of the devil were to be enemies

b.       the woman’s seed would mortally bruise the serpent’s head & the serpent would bruise the heel of the woman’s seed

F.      God’s promise to conquer sin is set in motion & the rest of the Bible shows how God fulfilled His promise to destroy sin & restore man’s fellowship with Him.

I.    DELIVERER TO BE ABRAHAM’S SEED

A.     (Gen.12:1-3) The unfolding of God’s plan to restore man’s fellowship to Him required a man (Abraham) & his descendants (Israelites); a law (Law of Moses) & a land (Palestine).

a.       many descendants

b.       great name

c.       Divine protection

d.      the Seed that would bless all men with deliverance from sin

B.     The promised SEED was to be a virgin’s son (Isa.7:14).  Mary’s son was miraculously conceived & in the normal process of time, born.  Immediately, Satan tried to destroy man’s hope of deliverance from sin by attempting to destroy the promised seed (Mt.2:16).

II.  LAW GIVEN TO MAKE MAN DESIRE THE PROMISED SEED

A.     One of the reasons the Law of Moses was given was to provide a list of do’s & don’ts & to show the Israelites a law/works system for justification only condemned & imprisoned them (Rom.5:20; 3:20; Gal.3:19).

B.     (Rom.7:13-24) Keeping law for righteousness did not work because man failed to keep it.

III.     JESUS, THE PROMISED SEED, PROVIDES DELIVERANCE

A.     (Rom.8:24,25-8:4; 7:6; Joh.8:34-36) Jesus does for us what we failed to do for ourselves.

B.     Jesus is the PROMISED SEED (Gen.12:3; Ac.3:25,26; 1Tim.1:15; Heb.2:9).

IV. HOW TO BECOME AN HEIR OF THE PROMISED SEED

A.     The fact that God fulfilled His promise in providing man a deliverer does not automatically remedy every man’s sin problem.  Remember, God did not create us to be puppets, but allows us the freedom to choose.

a.       many have chosen to become an heir of the promised seed

b.       sadly, many have chosen not become an heir of the promised seed

B.     To become an heir of the promised seed you must show your faith in God’s promised seed (Gal.3:26-29).

C.     It is when we trust in Jesus, the promised seed, that our broken fellowship with God is restored (Ac.3:19; 2Cor.5:18-21).
