FATHERHOOD

 

  INTRODUCTION

A.    (Prov.23:22-25) Today is the day our society has designated “Father’s Day.” 

a.      celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June each year

b.      origin is not clear

a.       may have began with a church service in West Virginia in 1908

b.       may have started in Vancouver, Washington

c.       may have originated in Spokane, Washington (most popular)- A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in the year 1909. Having been raised with five others by her father, William Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her

 

B.     One of the greatest blessings, with serious responsibilities, has been placed upon man’s shoulder – FATHERHOOD. 

 

I.                 FATHERHOOD RESPONSIBILITIES

A.    (Mt.1:1-6) Fatherhood is more than begetting children.  There are a lot of men who beget children, but are not fathers to those children.

 

B.     Fatherhood responsibilities involve:

a.      providing for one’s offspring (1Tim.5:8)

b.      training for making a living (Prov.22:6)

c.      spiritual instructions (Deut.6:4-9)

d.      nurturing & admonishing (Eph.6:4; Heb.12:7-11)

e.      letting go (Gen.2:24)

 

II.            ABRAHAM AS AN EXAMPLE

A.    (Rom.4:11,12) Abraham makes a good role model for us fathers.

a.      patient – he waited a long time for Isaac

b.      loving (Gen.22:2)

c.      unwavering faith (Gen.22; Heb.11:17-19)

d.      blessing (Gal.3:26-29)

 

B.     If you want to honor your father, or his memory, there is no greater way you can do it than by submitting to the Heavenly Father
