Abraham's Spiritual Descendants As Numerous As Stars

“‘And he brought him outside and said, ‘Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.’ Then he said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be.’” (Gen.15:5).  No one knows the exact number of stars in our Milky Way Galaxy.  People who have attempted to number them have offered guesstimates ranging from 200 billion to 3 thousand million billion (3,000,000,000,000,0000).  NASA probably knows as much about outer space as anyone and it alleges that “there are zillions of uncountable stars”.  In other words, no one knows how many stars there are.  This is also true of Abraham’s descendants.  Here was a man who did not have one descendant when God told him his descendants would be innumerable.  Now Abraham has numerous physical descendants, but it is likely his spiritual descendants that God is speaking of when He compared them with the number of stars and said, “So shall your offspring be”.  Christians are Abraham’s spiritual descendants.  How many Christians are there in the world?  No one but God knows.  Those who are foolish enough to suggest they know, must also know how many stars there are in outer space.  The fact of the matter is that all who have embraced the Savior by expressing their faith in turning from their sins and being immersed into His death, are spiritual descendants of Abraham.  How many have done this?  Only God knows.  In prophetic messages spoken centuries before the messianic age, God indicated there would be many.  For example, in Daniel’s prophecy about the Messiah’s kingdom he depicts it as a stone that fills the whole earth – “…But the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.” (Dan.2:35).  While this does not mean that everyone on earth becomes a Christian, it does reveal God’s kingdom exist throughout the earth.  There may have been times when it might have appeared to some that God’s family on earth was small, like Elijah who thought he was the only one left in Israel, only to learn there were seven thousand more who had not bowed their knees to Baal.  So, how many spiritual descendants does Abraham have?  When we meet the person who knows how many stars there are in outer space we can ask him.  Until then we will have to be content without knowing.  But do not worry, “…The Lord knows those who are his…” (2Tim.2:19).
